We all love the standard lakeside terraces in the middle of Como or Varenna, but the best spots are usually the ones tucked away where the local life actually happens. Just a short hop from Lecco, in the town of Garlate, I have found a place that perfectly bridges the gap between modern style and authentic local life: Grace Bakery.
A Modern Chic Diner Vibe In Garlate
Inside, Grace’s is not your typical rustic Italian shop. It feels like a modern chic version of a diner, with a design that is clean, intentional, and much more stylish than your average roadside stop. It manages to be sleek and contemporary while still feeling completely welcoming.
By day, it is a busy hub for fresh bread and pastries, but as the sun goes down, the space shifts effortlessly into a cool, modern bar. The atmosphere is 10/10.
The Aperitivo: A Proper Bakery Spread
The real draw here is the value you get for your money. Because this is a proper functioning bakery, the aperitivo that comes with your €8 cocktail is massive. You are not just getting a bowl of salted crisps and a few olives.
On our visit, we were served three different types of focaccia including salted, olive, and onion, along with several pieces of pizza and fresh bruschetta topped with a generous serving of chopped tomatoes.

While the aperitivo is what most people come for, they also do lunches and dinners if you are looking for something more substantial. I have not tried them myself as I have only ever been for their aperitivo, but if the aperitivo is anything to go by I’m guessing the food would be great. This is a hidden gem in the most literal sense. It does not rely on a fancy view to pull people in, it relies on quality and a great atmosphere. If you are driving between Lecco and the southern end of the lake, it is well worth the stop. Just keep a sharp eye out so you do not drive straight past it.
