A Practical Guide To Lago di Carezza: The Emerald Of The Dolomites

Parking And Logistics: When To Arrive

One of the best things about visiting Lake Carezza outside of the peak summer months is the flexibility. Because we were there in October, we were able to arrive at midday and still find a parking space in the main car park without much of a fuss. However, if you are planning your trip for the height of summer, I would strongly recommend being there much earlier to secure a spot.

Even in October, I was honestly surprised at how busy the lake was. If it is that lively in the autumn, I can only imagine the summer months are absolutely packed. If you want a bit of peace and quiet, or if you are visiting in July or August, arriving before 9:00 AM is your best bet for a stress-free experience.

The car park itself is located just across the road from the lake. It’s about €2/3 an hour. It accepts cash and card. It is very convenient as there is a pedestrian tunnel that takes you safely under the busy road and directly into the visitor centre and viewing area.

The Arrival: Why Midday Is A Secret Win (in October)

We arrived at around 12:30 PM. While many photographers tell you to arrive at dawn, there is something to be said for the midday sun. Because the lake sits in a deep basin at the foot of the Latemar peaks, you actually need the sun to be high in the sky to pull those famous emerald and turquoise hues out of the water.

A Surprising Lunch: Finding Authenticity At Carezza Snack

We were starving, we wanted to have something to eat before we went to the lake.

We are usually a bit sceptical of dining so close to major tourist attractions: they often lean toward the tourist trap side of things with high prices and average food. However, Carezza Snack, which is located just before the main lake entrance, proved us entirely wrong.

What To Order: A Tyrolean Feast

We decided to share a few bits to get a taste of everything. We ordered the Goulash Soup which was rich, spicy, and hearty.

A Trio of Canederli: These are traditional alpine dumplings. We had a mix, and while the spinach dumpling was lovely, the two Speck (cured ham) dumplings were the best.

The Experience: Jaw-Dropping Views Of The Rainbow Lake

To put it simply: wow. I quite literally had to pick my jaw off the floor when we first stepped out onto it. Even if you have seen a thousand photos of this lake, nothing prepares you for how beautiful it is in real life. Even in October, when the water in the Lake is low you could see why its called the Rainbow lake. The water shifts between deep emerald, bright turquoise, and a shimmering blue that looks almost artificial.

It is one of the few places that truly lives up to the social media hype. The way the Latemar mountains rise like jagged grey teeth directly behind the treeline is a proper sight. On a still day, the reflection is so perfect that it is hard to tell where the rock ends and the water begins.

The Walk: A Gentle Circuit Around The Lake

There is a well-maintained path that circles the entire perimeter of the lake. It is a very easy, flat walk that takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes, depending on how many times you stop to take photos. It is suitable for everyone.

One thing you will notice immediately is the wooden fence that runs along the entire path. This is a protected natural monument, to keep people from polluting and swimming in the water.

Final Thoughts: Is Lago di Carezza Worth The Hype?

To be honest, it is very rare that a place as popular as this actually manages to exceed the expectations set by social media. Lago di Carezza is one of those rare exceptions. It is a stunning, easy-to-access stop that gives you some of the best views in the Dolomites without needing a full day of hiking.
